This is a fun read. Starts with the perky teenage girl Joy confronted by the "Folk" boy called Ink. What can do wrong there, except Joy shouldn't be able to see him and his sister in the first place. And then their worlds collide. Ms. Metcalf a superb job of introducing the concept of Signaturae in place of true names which as we know hold such tremendous power in the fae world. I like her characters, the Bailiwick, Kurt, Ink and Inq, oh, and the cabana boys.

I kind of frowned at the car sceen(s). What about the whole iron is like krytonite thing for the Other Worlders? This was causally mentioned in the sequel. It doesn't hurt the story. And why do we read fantasy in the first place? Because the author has a license to create imaginary worlds with whatever governing rules that he/she likes.

I enjoyed the read. And immediately started Invisible, the second book in the trilogy.

The first book in the Twixt series is an invitation into enchantment. Joy Malone is an ordinary kid until she sees two strange kids, one who attacks her. But there is more than meets the eye with what's happening and soon Joy discover there's another world wrapped in the one she knows. The characters of Joy, Ink, and the rest are intriguing characters and the book is well paced. If you like fantasy and faerie tales, you'll love this book.
When I picked this book up it was because the plot line seemed to be different than anything else I had read. Boy was I right! I love fantasy books. Books that take me into a world that I cannot see. The Twixt is definitely a world I cannot see and I have not read about before.

Joy is like every other teenager, caught between divorced parents, lies, betrayal, and just wanting to have fun. One night she goes out with the ever chipper, most cautious best friend Monica. It was this night out that changed Joy’s world. What she considered secrets did not compare to the world she would be brought into. The mysterious boy and girl she saw that night would be forever etched into her being, something Joy did not want but knew if she wanted to keep her family and friends alive she had become a part of this unseen world. But, like everything around Joy, lies and deception were moving through the Twixt and soon Joy realizes that she is unsure of who she can trust but knows she has to be strong to help save everyone.

This book will keep you guessing until the end! Like Joy it is hard to tell who you can trust and who is out to get Joy. I found myself doubting almost every person that came in contact with Joy, even those sworn to protect her. This book will give you a roller coaster of emotions and not a moment to relax.

The love aspect is refreshing as well. What would a fantasy book without a hot guy to swoon over? This is no ordinary love story though. First, there is only one guy not two for Joy to pine over. Second, Joy doesn’t really want the guy around and nor does the guy want Joy around. Unfortunately due to a mistake they are bound together. The build of their story is great and takes up a good part of the book which is also refreshing because it is not thrown together expecting the reader to jump on board with a love story.

The story line started a little slow for me at first but picked up by the second chapter. Soon I was hooked and all I could think about was what was going to happen to Joy and who this mysterious guy was.

Metcalf writes a refreshing story about strength, love, lies, and the ability to overcome unworldly forces set out to bring you down. A must read!!
Indelible is the first book in Dawn Metcalf's new series the Twixt. Joy Malone is still dealing with her parents splitting up, her older brother Stef being away at college and quitting gymnastics. But she's trying her best to put her troubles behind her and move on with her life. One night while dancing at a club with her best friend Monica, Joy notices all-black eyes. The all-black eyes belong to a lean guy with spiky hair and the girl next to him could be his twin since she looks just like the guy, matching hair except whiteless eyes. Joy just figures they're Goths who just have freaky contacts. However the guy is disturbed by how Joy can "see" him and all of a sudden he tries to cut Joy's eye!

Joy is shocked and cries for help but by the time help arrives, the two Goth kids are gone. Joy can't explain what happened to her or to her dad. She knows that telling him the truth would just worry him more so she tells him something fell from the ceiling. Still Joy knows something really weird and scary is going on. She keeps meeting these weird strangers who call her Ink's Lehman and tell her to give Ink their messages. Unfortunately for Joy, she has no clue why these weird strangers call her Lehman or who Ink is but after a run in with a aether sprite who was furious at Joy for not delivering his message to Ink, Joy feels like she desperately needs answers as to what is happening to her before she has a complete meltdown. Luckily Ink and his sister Inq appear and answer Joy's accusations and questions.

Ink and Inq tell Joy that since she has the True Sight that's the only way she can see them when no one else can. And that the old rule is, if they come across someone with the Sight, they should remove that person's eyes so that they can have a more normal life. Of course this doesn't comfort Joy at all. However, Joy is told by Inq that since Ink didn't take away her sight or blind her Joy now wears his signatura and that since Joy's signatura wasn't an ordered mark she must pretend to be Ink's Lehman to cover up Ink's mistake. Now in order to survive, Joy must be Ink's Lehman and she must be indispensable to Ink so she can continue to live and protect her family.

I liked Indelible. Metcalf creates a new paranormal universe in this book and it's nice to read something completely different for a change. It was interesting to read about Ink and Inq's work and their signaturae. And how when Joy spent time in their world it was only a second in her world.

I liked Joy and I sympathized with her. She was in a rough spot with her parents divorcing, her older brother being away at college and not answering his phone and her best friend being busy with her new boyfriend. She was feeling abandoned by everyone and hurting. Not to mention, she was living a normal life before all this weird stuff started happening to her. But Joy met those challenges head on and tried her best to be Ink's Lehman. I had to respect her for that. I also liked Ink. He was strange, curious and shy. Joy and Ink made a cute couple together. I think they balanced each other out pretty well.

Still while I liked Indelible I didn't love it like I was expecting too. I did like Joy but she annoyed me a bit too. I felt like Joy's narration was a little bit strange for a 21st century girl. Just the way she described some things didn't sound like it was a teenage girl of this century speaking. Like when Joy is describing squirrels on her roof she says that they made a "nervous tickle" on her roof. I just thought that was a strange way for a teenage girl to describe something.

Also I thought that in some parts of the book some things weren't described enough. Like Joy's trip to Forty-eight Deer Run. She finds out while she's at school it's a nearby address so she decides to go and then she's halfway way there. She doesn't say anything about skipping class or that school just ended so I was confused as to what time of day it was. And the whole time monsters and weird people were leaving Joy messages to give to Ink in the beginning of the book, I though it was really strange that not once did Joy think that the guy who stabbed her in the eye could be Ink.

Joy being upset with her family for keeping secrets from her made me sympathize with her and made me a little annoyed with her too. I think Joy had every right to be mad at her mom for leaving her dad for a younger man and that if Stef really knew about it she deserved to be mad at him too. Her dad putting her mom's notes in her room without telling her made her mad and she was right to feel that way. But while I sympathized with Joy being upset with everyone keeping secrets from her I couldn't help but feel she was being a little hypocritical when she herself was keeping secrets. I mean her secrets were way bigger than any of her family's and it was for their safety that she kept those secrets but I couldn't help but feel she was being a tiny bit hypocritical.

Joy and Ink's relationship bothered me a bit by how fast they kinda got together. Joy is scared and mad at him for putting her through all the Lehman stuff (and boy does she have a right) and Ink is not very sorry or sympathetic for his actions but after watching Joy do gymnastics in a field and she sees him watching her they start to fall for each other and I thought that was a little too fast for them to just get over their hostel feelings for each other.

I give this 3 stars.
