This book took me by surprise. This series is my first experience with Maya Hughes, so I didn’t know what to expect, but since I am a big hockey romance fan, I was definitely willing to give it a chance. I am so glad I did! This book was the best surprise! It has amazing characters who grow and develop in the best of ways throughout the story, a fantastic storyline that brings all the feels, and it left me longing for more! What more could you want?

Declan and Mak are my favorite kinds of characters. They are flawed and real and relatable. They make mistakes and have struggles, but they grow and learn and develop throughout the story. They have a fantastic backstory as high school enemies who love to get under each other’s skin, but all that tension and banter morphs into so much more when they are forced to work together as partners in college. And once they start to really get to know each other, that banter quickly morphs into sparks that can’t be contained or ignored.

I like that this story took place over a longer period of time. They knew each other in high school, but they really don’t meet back up until their senior year in college. It wasn’t like things completely changed overnight. They had time to change and grow on their own before they began changing and growing together. This definitely has some elements of opposites attract, but really they aren’t completely different beneath the surface. Both of these characters have heartbreaking things from their past they are trying to deal with, and they are both determined to take care of their problems themselves. Once they are finally able to open up to one another, I love that they are able to love and support one another without having one character jump in to “fix” the other.

Not only did they have a fantastic backstory, the build to their romance was delicious. There were so many will they/ won’t they moments along the way that I was dying for them to get together by the time it happened. The tension and sparks of passion between them were undeniable, but it was clear to everyone except them that it was leading to so much more. I truly liked them both individually and wanted so much for them to embrace what could be between them, and when they finally did, it was completely worth the wait! Watching their walls come down in a way they didn’t with anyone else was perfect.

I truly loved this book. My only complaint is that I have to wait to read the next book. I fell in love with the whole crew in Kings of Rittenhouse, and my love only grew through Shameless King! I am completely interested in all of their stories, but am on the edge of my seat for Emmett and Avery in particular!! Please tell me they have a second chance coming soon! I definitely recommend starting with Kings of Rittenhouse because it is truly the perfect introduction to this series, but you won’t be lost without it.

Shameless King edition by Maya Hughes Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

This is the first book I've read from Maya and I've got to say, this was a really good read. Mak and Declan did not like each other in high school and when Mak has to leave Stanford to finish out her senior year back at home, she's hoping not to run into the last person who can get under her skin like no other. But fate seems to have other ideas as she runs into no one other than Declan himself on one of the first nights she works at the bar.

Declan is so close to making it into the NHL but quickly finds out that his grades don't quite make the cut. Having to retake Sophomore Seminar isn't his ideal choice, but if he wants to stay on the team, he needs to take it and make the grades. What he doesn't know is that Mak also has to take the same class as well in order to make up for the coursework she's missed upon transferring. When these two are paired up in class, will they end up making it work, or will they hate each other even more?

I won't say anything more other than you NEED to get this book to find out!
This was one fantastic book! It had it all chemistry between H and h, angst, humor, suspense, anger, betrayal, love, and some of the most seductive scenes between Mak and Declan. Had some body parts tingling, wink. (One scene at end of chapter 19, outside of restaurant bathroom…Oh My Word!!!)
Makenna and Declan both went to Rittenhouse Prep where Dec was one of the Hockey stars known as the Kings. They sparred more often than actually spoke, she seeing him as too laid back and he seeing her as too intense and up-tight. After three years they meet up again at college where she has transferred back from Stanford and he is a king on the college’s hockey team. They commence the same banter as before but things change. Why does Mak come back? What changes and why? What makes Dec strive to succeed on the ice? So many wonderful circumstances to discover in this book. There are other characters that we were introduced to in KINGS OF RITTENHOUSE, the prequel, and reappear in this book with just as much mystery. I want to know more!
I volunteered to review an ARC of this book and enthusiastically recommend. I also suggest you read the prequel, which I think has been free.
With the strong start set up in the prequel, it was easy to jump right into Mak and Declan's book. It was an incredibly fun and addicting enemies to lovers romance. Their bickering and obvious attraction to each other was so entertaining. Once they took the step toward being something more than frenemies, the story took on a sweet and sexy tone. I liked that. I also liked both of their back stories and the emotion they brought to the story line.

I loved everything about this book except for one thing. Mak and Declan were college seniors. I feel like I missed out on three years of fun with them. I was hoping all the books would be set in the college atmosphere, but I know they won't be. That makes me sad.

Overall, Shameless King (with its prequel) was a great beginning to what's shaping up to be a fun new adult series. I'm looking forward to reading more about these kings.
