The Lagoon Lilli Carré Books
Lilli Carre's "Lagoon" is filled with absolutely gorgeous artwork, and the elegant little hardcover will dignify any shelf. The story has sufficient allure and initially draws the reader into its intriguing atmosphere well, but there is ultimately little to no resolution of the plot. It's a shame, because everything leading up to the conclusion was delightful and then... that's it? Seems like a missed opportunity for a really dynamic climax.I'll give Carre the benefit of the doubt in regards to the story's content, since it primarily revolves around the effects of a mysterious creature's song on different audiences. Carre draws music visually probably about as well as anyone can, but of course, there's no sound! Maybe if I could have been beguiled by the hypnotic tune in the same ways the characters were, the desired effect of the story might have been achieved for me (though I could obviously be completely wrong about said intent/desire of the author).
The aesthetic value both inside and outside of "The Lagoon" helps me validate my purchase to myself, but I felt underwhelmed, if not even disappointed, by the overall reading experience.
