A very enjoyable tale about an orphan who becomes a doctor and lands a job on a remote island. Because of his love for stories and for the island and it’s people, he writes a book of the island’s lore and takes pictures of significant events and people. The House at the Edge of Night A Novel Catherine Banner 9780812998795 Books Reviews

This was a satisfying, heart-warming, engrossing multi-generational account. The author deftly melded reality-based narrative with mythical-like tales. Reflecting back on this novel, I can see how the here-and-now story could easily become tomorrow's "mythology" as the stories about the past are transmitted to future generations. I also liked the juxtaposition of life on the island with the outside world, especially as both evolved and intersected over time. While many novels leave you hanging, this will not. It is complete within itself.
I had to read this book for my bookclub. It was a huge effort to finish it. Nothing about any of the characters or situations was very interesting. The author seemed to mostly want to show off how many words in Italian she could put in the book. Don't bother with this book unless you have an Italian/English dictionary
While interesting with relatable characters, the book was too long and repetitious. Castellamare and its inhabitants survive two world wars, gossip, superstition, secrets, scandals and family infighting over a period of several generations. Over it all devotion to Sant'Agata and her annual festival serves as the touchstone of the passage of time. That and the family residing in the house at the edge of night.
This book captivated me like a book of modern day fables. Maybe because I have never been to Italy, maybe because I long for a simpler time when families all stayed in one place under one roof for generations, maybe it's just plain well written! This book was so soothing, and painted such a clear picture of this enchanted island - I want to go there even though it's imaginary!
Beautiful, evocative, moving, compassionate, wise. The fictional island, Castellamare, is as much a character as the inhabitants. (Yes, that's become a cliche but, here, it's apt.) The story revolves around four generations of islanders who experience and respond to "miracles" as well as typical life events, in their unique but, also, universal way. The characters are sympathetic, even the most odious of them, and you grow to care about their fates. They are good and they are evil, which means they are human.

Anyone who has foreign-born parents or grandparents would really appreciate and enjoy this book, especially, but not restricted to, Italians. It's just a nice change from reading about ourselves.
This was a beautiful saga of four generations of one family living on an imaginary island off the coast of Sicily. I loved the ethnic flavor, the superstitions of the people and the stories written in "the book" by the patriarch, Amedeo as well as the archaeological discoveries unearthed on the island. The characters were all well developed whether they were good, kind people or hateful and selfish. It was a book that felt true to life through the ages.

I recommend this to any reader who just wants to curl up with a good book and get lost. This was the first book that I have read by Catherine Banner and I certainly look forward to reading more of her work.
I was looking for a novel in which I could totally lose myself, and this one did it for me. I cared about the characters, I liked the descriptions of the little Italian town, and all the idiosyncracies of the people, especially the local flavor. The tie-ins with local legends made it seem very down-to-earth, and yet somewhat magical at the same time.I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and I highly recommend it.
